Gutturnio DOC: the red wine from Piacenza
Back to all Introduction If
While Piacenza’s Colli Piacentini hills are best known for their bold, characterful reds like Gutturnio, the region also harbours a lesser-known treasure: its distinctive white wines.
Among these, two indigenous grape varieties stand out as true hidden gems—Ortrugo and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica—each offering a singular expression of the local terroir.
A native varietal of Piacenza, Ortrugo produces wines that are pale straw-yellow with subtle green highlights that evolve to richer golden tones with age. On the nose, it offers an enticing aromatic bouquet, where orchard fruits such as peach, pear, and green apple blend seamlessly with delicate floral notes of acacia, broom, and wild herbs.
A hallmark of Ortrugo is its distinct mineral backbone, a direct expression of the limestone-rich soils of the Colli Piacentini. On the palate, it is crisp and vibrant, with lively acidity and persistent salinity. The result is a well-balanced wine with finesse, freshness, and a clean, lingering finish—ideal for those who appreciate purity and elegance in their whites.
With its loosely packed, golden-hued clusters, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica delivers wines with rich straw-yellow colour and deep golden reflections that intensify over time. This aromatic variety is renowned for its exuberant nose—a true olfactory kaleidoscope. Expect layers of citrus (orange peel, citron, lime), exotic fruits (mango, papaya), floral notes (rose, jasmine, white blossom), and delicate spice nuances like white pepper and fresh ginger.
On the palate, this Malvasia captivates with its natural aromatic richness. Whether vinified dry or off-dry, it remains graceful and never overwhelming. A lively acidity offsets its softness, giving structure and balance to its expressive character. The finish is long, textured, and profoundly aromatic—a wine that lingers in both taste and memory.
