Gutturnio DOC: the red wine from Piacenza
Back to all Introduction If
In the heart of Emilia-Romagna, where the plains meet the Apennines and the Po winds sinuously, lies a land rich in history and flavor: the Colli Piacentini. Here, among lush vineyards and ancient castles, are born two native grape varieties that have made this area famous throughout the world: Barbera and Bonarda.
Barbera: Vibrant Acidity and Bold Expression
Barbera is a grape defined by its dynamic character and expressive nature. Its compact clusters of deep bluish-black berries yield wines of intense ruby red, often with youthful violet hues that mellow into garnet with age. On the nose, Barbera reveals a complex aromatic profile — ripe cherry, blackberry and dark plum are underscored by spicy undertones of black pepper, liquorice and nutmeg. On the palate, it delivers a vivid acidity and linear structure, with a generous mid-palate and a lingering, slightly spicy finish. Barbera’s freshness and food-friendly style make it a versatile companion to a wide range of cuisines.
Next to Barbera, Bonarda represents the other soul of red wine from Piacenza. A grape variety that gives the wine a velvety smoothness and irresistible appeal. Its scattered clusters, composed of dark blue berries, give the wine a deep garnet red color, with hints tending toward brick red. On the nose, Bonarda is characterized by a broad and enveloping bouquet, where fruity notes of ripe red fruit, such as sour cherry jam and morello cherry, intertwine with spicy hints of black pepper, cloves and nutmeg. In the mouth, the wine seduces with its velvety softness and elegant structure, giving a persistent and harmonious taste, with a long and slightly spicy finish.

On the palate, it offers balance, concentration and vitality — a wine with personality and persistence, built to please both the curious and the connoisseur.
