Gutturnio DOC: the red wine from Piacenza
Back to all Introduction If you are seeking an authentic
In the vibrant heart of Italy’s winemaking heritage lies a sparkling gem: Prosecco. This effervescent wine, known for its persisten perlage and refined flavour, resh, fruit-driven character, is far more than a simple alternative to Champagne. It’s a symbol of joy, conviviality, and the soul of countless celebrations and memorable toasts.
While Prosecco is often likened to Champagne, the two wines hail from different worlds, each with its own identity. First and foremost, their geographical origins diverge: Prosecco is distinctly Italian, primarily produced in the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions, whereas Champagne is exclusively crafted in the eponymous region of northeastern France.
But the most telling distinction lies in their vinification methods. Prosecco is generally made using the Charmat-Martinotti method, where the second fermentation takes place in stainless steel autoclaves. This technique preserves the wine’s aromatic freshness and emphasizes vibrant notes of green apple, pear, and white flowers. Champagne, by contrast, is produced via the Traditional Method (Méthode Champenoise), with secondary fermentation occurring in the bottle, yielding greater complexity, finesse, and characteristic brioche and pastry aromas derived from lees aging.

Another hallmark of Prosecco is its broad stylistic range, especially in terms of residual sugar. From Brut (dry, with up to 12 g/L of sugar) to Extra Dry (a touch softer, 12–17 g/L), Dry (not actually dry—17–32 g/L), and occasionally Demi-Sec, Prosecco caters to an array of palates and occasions. This versatility makes it a go-to choice whether you prefer a crisp aperitif or a more rounded style to accompany desserts or spicy dishes.
Beyond being a delightful standalone pour, Prosecco is a brilliant base for cocktails that exude elegance and flair. Here are a few sparkling classics that highlight its versatility:
A Venetian staple that marries chilled Prosecco with white peach purée, offering a soft, aromatic, and subtly sweet sip.
Arguably the quintessential Italian aperitivo, blending Prosecco with Aperol (or Campari) and a splash of soda for a bittersweet, effervescent experience.
A brunch favourite that pairs Prosecco with freshly squeezed orange juice for a bright, citrusy lift.
A playful twist on the classic Negroni, replacing gin with Prosecco—resulting in a lighter, sparkling interpretation with a bitter edge.
At Monteverdi Vini, we honour the expressive charm and diversity of Prosecco with a carefully curated portfolio of sparkling wines that reflect both tradition and terroir. From our Prosecco Brut, ideal for sophisticated mixology and celebratory toasts, to our Demi-Sec, crafted for those who enjoy a rounder, fruit-forward profile—each bottle is a testament to our commitment to quality, elegance, and the Italian spirit of hospitality.
